The village of La Croix-Valmer (3500 inhabitants) is build up against the Maures cliff road in the
Cavalaire-sur-Mer bay halfway
between
Lavandou and
Saint-Tropez. With its 7 natural sandy beaches, extended over 6 km of coastline, la Croix Valmer is famous for the quality of its bathing waters. It has a large protected natural park with beautiful walks in the woods and along the coastline, like the so-called "Path of Customs Officers" (Sentier des Douaniers) of Gigaro beach in Cape Lardier and its outstanding scenery. The origin of the name "Croix-Valmer" is attributed to the Emperor Constantin headed to Croix Valmer Gigaro to battle against his brother-in-law Maxence in 312 AD, after his vision of a cross in the sky marked with the sign 'in hoc signo vinces".
In 1893, a stone cross was erected at the very same site where the tradition sets the apparition. Dependent on Gassin, the village of La Croix-Valmer, became an independent municipality in 1934. Ancestral passage, the presence of man
is revealed by many prehistoric tools, the cistus of Cape Taillat (Dolmen de Briande) or the roman farm of Pardigon (third century BC). In 1945 the beaches were a strategic place of the
landing in Provence. Noteworthy monuments: Maison des Pères du Saint Esprit, Sylvabelle, Villa Andalousie, Villa Louise, Villa Alléluia (1909)... which are linked to the memory of Croix-Valmer’s great families.
